xiaomi She announced a new innovation in the field of smartphone batteries on her Weibo profile. This allows capacity to be increased by 10% without increasing the required space. This is not achieved by a new type of cell chemistry, but by changing the structure of the cell.
Each smartphone battery consists not only of the battery cell itself, but also of a small circuit board with control electronics. This partly takes care of battery management and provides safety functions such as protection against short circuits, deep discharge, overcharging and overheating. With common form factors, this plate protrudes horizontally from the end of the cell. This increases the battery’s surface area by a percentage that cannot be used for more capacity.
Xiaomi has now managed to make changes to the structure of this panel, allowing for a significantly smaller form factor. This change allows the electronics to be connected vertically at the end of the cell, which greatly reduces the space required. As a result, the battery cell itself can be stretched, which in turn means an increase in capacity. Specifically, Xiaomi is talking about an increase of up to 10%.
This innovation is particularly interesting for slim smartphones. In the past two years, there have been no really thin devices from Xiaomi, because large batteries in the range from 4500 to 5000 mAh have been used almost all the time. These were the last notable exceptions Xiaomi Mi 11 Lite 5G And the Xiaomi 11 Lite 5G NE. With just under 7mm, these smartphones were noticeably slimmer than the rest of the Xiaomi models, but they also came with a much smaller battery by comparison.
With the new technology, Xiaomi could accommodate a larger battery in such thin devices, so that the slim design comes with less battery life. For example, a smartphone that previously had only a 4000mAh battery can accommodate a 4400mAh battery. For the end customer, this can make a noticeable difference when it comes to getting your day done reliably.
According to Xiaomi, the new battery technology will be used in the first smartphones next year. Specifically, the goal here is the second half of the year. So thin smartphone friends can be curious about what Xiaomi plans here.
