Salt fields, fishing dwindling, tourists turning away: Small Pacific nations are suffering from climate change. Some fear losing entire countries.
FIt is located 16,000 km between Glasgow, the global capital of climate change over the next two weeks, and Suva, the capital of Fiji. but what about Climate Conference Negotiating in Scotland makes headlines in the island nation. Because any news about global warming is vital to the inhabitants of small islands sometimes in the Pacific Ocean, surrounded by huge amounts of water.
“The failure of (the conference) could mean the loss of the entire Pacific nations,” said Frank Bainimarama, Fiji’s prime minister. “We are tired. We want to move forward and be prepared, not just always respond to disasters. We know that every dollar that boosts our resilience to climate change saves up to $7 for rebuilding after a disaster,” says his counterpart from Tuvalu, Kosia Natano. He currently chairs the Pacific Islands Forum.
