Megan Herzogen (40) endured a lot of hatred and malice on social media for a long time. Therefore, according to the Duchess, she and her husband are avoiding Facebook & Co. for “self-care” reasons. Prince Harry (37) became the target of a coordinated hate and disinformation campaign on Twitter. Both were attacked on the SMS service, with Meghan receiving 80 percent of the abuse. It analyzed 114,000 tweets about the Sussex family and identified 83 accounts allegedly behind 70 percent of the malicious tweets.

“The analysis allowed us to isolate 55 single-purpose accounts that we identified as primary hate accounts and 28 secondary hate accounts that reinforced the primary accounts,” the report said. Accordingly, the accounts will have a total of 187,631 followers and will achieve “a combined, unique and potential reach of 17 million users”.

Some tweets may contain coded racist language. The pattern of interactions between accounts is “inorganic,” and analysts conclude that there has been a concerted effort to intensify the couple’s harassment. Most of the accounts appear to have been created by humans. “We searched for bot accounts and found very little evidence of bot activity,” Christopher Buzzi, managing director of the Washington Post, told The Washington Post.

Four out of the 55 primary accounts highlighted by the report have been banned from Twitter. Bozzi also stated that activity against the couple decreased significantly soon after the report was released. BuzzFeed told BuzzFeed News that the Twitter campaign against Meghan was unlike anything he or his team had seen before. “There is no motive,” he said, referring to the anti-Meghan campaign against other disinformation and harassment campaigns on Twitter, such as the #StopTheSteal movement that wanted to overturn the results of the 2020 US presidential election, or the campaign in which actress Amber was involved. Heard, 35, wanted her removed from the “Aquaman” sequel after she allegedly abused ex-husband Johnny Depp, 58.

Toxicity in the network was one of the reasons for the royal withdrawal, as Sussex has repeatedly emphasized. In 2019, Buckingham Palace, Clarence House and Kensington Palace issued new social media guidelines to deter trolls. In particular, it was about foul personal insults against Duchess Meghan and Duchess Kate (39), wife of Prince William (39).
