New York City elects a new mayor

Brooklyn County’s president is likely to win the liberal bastion of more than eight million people against Republican challenger Curtis Sliwa (67), founder of the Citizens Initiative for Safer Streets. The campaign between the two men was marked by personal attacks – this is how Adams called Sliwa a racist, who in turn called him elitist.

Politically, too, the candidates for the highest office in New York City have very different ideas. While the moderate Adams wants at least to keep the police’s controversial six billion budget in check, Sliwa has announced that he wants to hire 3,000 new workers. In addition, Sliwa, who is known for wearing the red hat, wants to scrap coronavirus vaccination requirements for public employees and restaurant visitors – and Adam plans to keep that.

Both politicians want to succeed Bill de Blasio (Democrat), who can no longer run for mayor after two terms in office. New York City is the cultural and financial center of the United States and around the world. In the United States, the city is also more politically important than other cities. It is considered a benchmark for progressive politics.

In addition to the mayor’s office, the new head of the attorney general’s office and new members of the city council will be identified on Tuesday in New York. A number of potential constitutional changes will also be decided upon – including one for the right to clean air, clean water and a healthy environment.
