The United States has threatened Russia with “grave consequences” if the military intensifies its conflict with Ukraine. A senior US government official told US President Joe Biden that he would make it clear to Russian colleague Vladimir Putin at a video conference today that “if Russia decides to continue like this, the costs will be very high.”
Putin would then have to calculate “significant economic countermeasures between both Europeans and the United States.” In the conversation, Biden will also emphasize that there is a diplomatic path in the crisis.
“It should be clear: we do not know if President Putin will decide on another military expansion in Ukraine, but if he decides to do so, we know that he will provide the capabilities for such an expansion,” the US government spokesman said.
Biden wants to “coordinate” the embassy with allies
Biden wanted to consult with key European allies during the day to “consolidate his message”. US Secretary of State Anthony Blingen will hold talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Selenzky in the coming days.
The United States has accused Russia of deploying troops too far from the Ukrainian border. Moscow denies allegations of aggression and accuses Ukraine of sending more than 120,000 troops to pro-Russian separatist areas of Donetsk and Luhansk.
Putin and Biden want to talk about the Ukraine crisis in a video summit today. In addition, it should be about cyber security and the Iranian nuclear program and other international conflicts. The two first met in Geneva in June as heads of state.
