More than 6,000 flights around the world were canceled or canceled over Christmas. As data from Flightaware.com showed on Saturday evening, nearly 2,800 flights around the world were canceled on Saturday, including nearly 1,000 flights with or departing destinations in the United States. There were more than 8000 delays. On Friday there were already 2,400 cancellations and 11,000 delays. So far, about 1,100 flight cancellations have been recorded on Sunday.
According to the airlines, many flight cancellations in one of the major travel periods of the year are due to the fact that many pilots, flight attendants and other staff have contracted the coronavirus or are in quarantine. Most of the cancellations were carried out by Chinese airlines: China Eastern canceled 1,000 flights on Friday and Saturday, which is more than a fifth of the flight schedule. Air China also suspended about 20 percent of its scheduled flights during this period.
American airlines have also had to cancel many flights. According to Flightaware, United Airlines alone had to cancel about 450 flights on Friday and Saturday — about ten percent of all scheduled flights. “The increase in the number of Omicron cases nationwide this week has had a direct impact on our crews and the people who continue our operations,” the airline said.
US carrier Delta Air was forced to cancel at least 300 flights on Saturday – after some 170 failures on Friday. Delta said the company did not see any other possibility of being able to offer the flights after all – “including diversion and the exchange of aircraft and crews”.
