Electricity and aviation were disrupted today in the eastern part of the United States due to a severe snowstorm. Southeastern Canada was also affected by the storm. More than 215,000 homes in the United States have no electricity. The worst affected states are South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia.
According to the FlightAware website, nearly 1,600 flights were canceled at US airports by noon (local time). About 3,000 flights have already been canceled due to the snowfall. A blizzard warning has been issued for parts of Canada, including parts of the provinces of Quebec and Ontario. Many schools were closed in Quebec and southern Ontario.
In the United States, the National Weather Service (NWS) expects a “severe snowstorm” to weaken over the course of the day. Nevertheless, one can expect “significant impacts from snow, ice, wind and flood on the beach”. Eleven states still have storm warnings in place. The winter storm first hit southeastern and coastal areas east of the country on Sunday, before hitting the New England states and southern Canada.
