Scientists have discovered a mysterious object in space. Researchers at the International Center for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) have discovered something “astronomers have never seen before,” according to one of them. press release.
Researchers believe the object is a “white dwarf” – a small but extremely compact star – or a neutron star. The special feature: a huge wave of energy is emitted from the body three times per hour. Every twenty minutes, the object is the brightest radio source for about a minute. Radio sources are astronomical bodies that emit radio waves.
‘It was kind of scary’
The object kept appearing and disappearing as researchers observed radio waves in the universe, said Natasha Hurley Walker of ICRAR. “It was totally unexpected,” Hurley Walker said. “It was kind of scary because no astronomer who knows something would do something like that.” And: “It’s very close to us, only 4,000 light-years away. It’s in our galaxy’s backyard.”
