The Russian missile ship Moscow sank in mid-April after a missile attack by the Ukrainian military. According to several media reports, the US Secret Service provided information on the operation to Kiev. The Pentagon did not want to learn about it.
According to media reports, US intelligence information helped the Ukrainian military to sink the main “Moscow” of the Russian Black Sea Fleet. However, the US government was unaware of Ukraine’s plans, and several American media outlets, such as the Washington Post and the New York Times, reported the incident, citing anonymous individuals familiar with the matter.
At the request of the Ukrainian military, the United States identified the ship as “Moscow” and helped locate it, NBC News reported. “Moscow” was sunk in mid-April, presumably with Ukrainian anti-ship missiles of the “Neptune” type. Moscow denies it.
In 2014, the missile was responsible for air defense in the Black Sea between the Danube and the mouth of the Crimean Peninsula, which was annexed by Russia. The New York Times reported on Wednesday that the Ukrainian military was quoting US information in a successful protest against Russia. For example, the Ukrainian military claims to have killed twelve Russian generals in a targeted shooting since the start of the Russian offensive. Some information has been confirmed by the Russian side. For example, in early March, the southern Russian city of Novorossiysk announced that General Andrei Sukhovsky, the deputy commander of the 41st Army, had died “heroically” in Ukraine.
Russia is hoping to win
Pentagon spokesman John Kirby responded to the statement by saying, “We do not provide information on the whereabouts of senior military leaders on the battlefield and we do not participate in the target decisions of the Ukrainian military.” However he acknowledged that their numbers were not enough to defeat Obama’s government. Kirby did not provide any details. Ukraine combines information provided by the United States and its allies with its own information. Then the Ukrainian army will make its own decisions.
Despite Western intelligence support for Ukraine, Russia hopes for victory. “Our military is aware that the United States, Britain and NATO as a whole continue to provide information and other data to the Ukrainian armed forces,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov. A spokesman for President Vladimir Putin said that, like the Western arms supply, it “does not contribute to the speedy end of the operation.” However, this support will not prevent Russia from achieving its own set of goals.
