Andy Warhol’s painting of Hollywood legend Marilyn Monroe is the most expensive work of art of the 20th century since Monday. The auction of the picture in New York lasted four minutes.
HIn the famous picture of Hollywood legend Marilyn Monroe of the pop artist Andy Warhol On Monday it sold for a record $195 million (€185 million). The 1964 screen plate “Shot Sage Blue Marilyn” went on sale at Christie’s New York headquarters for just four minutes. Thus, Warhol’s work is the most expensive 20th century artwork ever sold at auction.
The work remained just below the estimate of $200 million at auction. The screen imprint represented features a pink face, ruby red lips, yellow hair, and blue eye shadow on a light blue background. Christie’s He sold the work on behalf of the Zurich-based Thomas and Doris Amman Foundation.
The most expensive painting ever sold at auction is Salvator Mundi, attributed to Leonardo da Vinci, which sold 450.3 million dollars at auction in 2017. Pablo Picasso set the previous record for a work of the twentieth century called “Women of Algeria (version 0)” – “Women of Algeria” – Which was auctioned in May 2015 for $179.4 million for a Warhol painting for $105.4 million.
