It is estimated that millions of people participated in the “Great Lunch” at some 16,000 events. All residents could register for festivals in advance, and there were also many publicly organized events. Some municipalities have waived fees already owed for road closures to allow parties.

The palace has released pictures showing Duchess Kate, the wife of Prince William, the Queen’s grandson, baking cakes with her three children. She added that the sweets were intended for a street party in the Welsh capital Cardiff.
