During a visit to Kyiv on Saturday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that the assessment of Ukraine’s EU membership application would be completed by the end of next week. The Commission will make a recommendation regarding the status of a potential candidate for admission to the country – a decision on this does not anticipate possible admission and is also not linked to a time frame.
The views of the European Union countries on this issue have so far differed greatly. Selinsky criticized the partial resistance to the Ukrainian accession plans. “What else should happen in Europe so that skeptics realize that keeping Ukraine out of the European Union harms Europe,” he asked. Ukraine had applied to join the European Union in March – shortly after the Russian invasion.
The leader of the European People’s Party (EPP), Manfred Weber, has called on EU member states to grant Ukraine candidate status. He called on the German government to take a clear position on this issue. “EU heads of state and government should not waver when it comes to Ukraine. They need a back-doors message that Ukraine is a candidate for EU membership,” the leader of the party and parliamentary group of European Christian Democrats told EU newspapers. Funke Media Group (Sunday Online / Monday Print). “The federal government in particular must immediately give a clear signal of support. Ukraine, like the Republic of Moldova, belongs to the European Union.” Weber said words of encouragement are not enough.
