Let old furniture sparkle with new splendor or even give it a whole new job: that’s exactly what the new myHOMEBOOK “Refurbished” series is all about! In the first episode, DIY and upcycling specialist Thomas Klotz shows us what you can do with an old chair.
What do you do with the old chair where the upholstery is broken and the wood shows its age? That’s right, recycling! Because the piece of furniture is too good to simply be thrown away. Together with a DIY expert Thomas Klots From Berlin in the new series “Upholstered” we show how you can create completely new things from old furniture. In the first episode, the old chair turns into a new chair garden. In the video, we show how it works!
Reuse the chair – what do you need for this?
To build a chair garden, you first need an old chair to recycle. What it looks like is a matter of taste – but the old models made of wood are especially beautiful. You will also need:

Step by step instructions for garden chair
Building a chair garden yourself is relatively easy with a little skill. Thanks to the step-by-step instructions, the project is also something for recycling beginners. This is how it works:
- First, remove the upholstery. With many older chairs, this is slack in the frame and can be removed easily.
- Peel off the canvas and use the frame as a template for the new board. Draw the outline with a pencil.
- The board is then sawn with a jigsaw. Important: To ensure that nothing slips, the board must be secured with screw clips.
- Then it’s time to get rid of. If there are a few unclean edges, no problem – they can simply be sanded down afterwards.
- The next step is the holes for the pots in the chipboard. So that the ships do not fall off, a small calculation is required. We show what it is in the video.
- Then you draw the circles with a compass and then you can see them outside with the saw. But since you can’t get into the circle with a saw blade, you first have to drill a hole in advance.
- The plank is then sanded down so that the unsightly edges are gone. Depending on the condition of the old chair, it should at least be sanded down.
- Then it’s time to draw – you can use the so-called “chalk paint” for this. Needs two to three coats of paint and a wax seal or clear coat.
- one for the chair shabby chic To give it a patina. This antique look is achieved with a dark wax, applied infrequently to the corners and edges.
