‘Extreme court’: US President attacks Supreme Court

US President Joe Biden has again attacked the US Supreme Court after its decision on abortion rights. “I share the public anger in this extreme court,” Biden said at a conference with conservatives on Friday. The court wants to turn America back and curtail its rights. Under former President Donald Trump, the Supreme Court has moved far to the right.

Biden also noted that before the fall congressional elections, he sees no way to suspend an outdated rule in the Senate to legalize nationwide abortion in the United States. “Right now, we don’t have votes in the Senate,” he said. He hopes that will change after the elections in November.

The majority of thin razor

The Democrats in Biden at the moment have only a slim majority in the Senate. They control 50 seats, exactly half of them – and so they are regularly slowed down by the so-called deactivation characteristic. Not all Democrats are behind the stall comment either. Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Senator Kirsten Sinema of Arizona have previously opposed.

Stalling is a more than 100-year-old regulation that states that for many bills, 60 of the 100 senators must agree to end debate before there can be a vote in a chamber of Congress. Biden warned that Republicans might have enough spirit in the fall to push legislation through Congress banning abortion across the country.

The Supreme Court struck down abortion rights last week, arguing that they were unconstitutional. Since there is no state law protecting this right, the legislature now rests with the states. The court also significantly slowed Biden’s climate agenda with its ruling on Thursday. In the upcoming session, she will hear, among other things, an issue regarding election law that could have serious consequences for the 2024 presidential election.
