British Conservatives begin electing Johnson’s successor

The British Conservative Party will start electing a successor on Wednesday after Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that he will step down (today).

The nominees are former Finance Minister Rishi Sunak and Secretary of State Liz Truss. Commerce Secretary Penny Mordaunt and former Secretary of State Kimi Badenouche also got opportunities.

Dozens of candidates

Nearly ten candidates have expressed interest. In order to advance to the next round, they need at least 30 votes in the conservative parliamentary group on the first ballot. The 358 Conservative MPs in the House of Commons are entitled to vote.

Comes a lot of sounds

Several rounds of voting are planned through July 20, until only two applicants remain. Then the party members have a say: In the run-off, they decide the future leadership of the Conservatives – and thus also the next prime minister. The result must be known no later than the 5th of September. Johnson announced his retirement last Thursday after a series of scandals. The 58-year-old wants to remain in office until a decision is made on his successor.
