Kasper Ruud, who won titles in Stadt, Gstaad and then Kitzbühel in just three weeks a year ago, was delighted with his ninth Tour title, eighth on sand and fourth in Switzerland. “Of course I’m very happy with the way things are going for me in Switzerland,” Rudd said afterwards. “I knew before the weekend that I had to find my best level to win the championship. That is exactly what I was able to do.”
Five Austrians in the main competition
Austria represented by five players in the main singles competition in Kitzbühel: On Sunday, qualifiers Sebastian Offner and Gerald Melzer completed the quintet with their second-round victory. Dominic Thiem and wildcards Jurij Rodionov and Filip Misolic have been fixed before.
Offner also won Sunday’s second qualifying match without dropping a set and defeated Vitaly Satchko of Ukraine 6:4, 6:4. Gerald Melzer, who traveled to Kitzbühel right after his quarter-final exit at Challenger in Tampere, defeated Russia’s Ivan Gacho 6: 3, 3:6, 6:3. First round opponents will be drawn during Sunday.
Dominic Thiem meets lucky loser Alexander Sheuchenko on Tuesday night, Sebastian Offner “inherits” Richard Gasquet as a first-round contender. Jurij Rodionov will meet Hermann Casanova and play on the field on Monday, as will Filip Misulic who will meet Daniel Dutra da Silva.
