Giacomo Puccini: “Gianni Cecchi” – Salzburg Festival

Sunday 14 August 2022 / 5:35 PM – 6:40 PM
ARTE

Opera (Austria 2022, first broadcast) A new production of Giacomo Puccini’s play “Il Trittico” can be experienced at this year’s Salzburg Festival. Director Christophe Lowe altered the fixed order of the three one-act plays and placed the piece “Gianni Chicchi”, which is usually performed at the end, at the beginning. Georgian baritone Misha Kiria can be heard in the title role, while Lithuanian soprano Asmik Grigorian plays Schicchi’s daughter Loretta. The music director is Franz Welser-Most.

“Gianni Chichi”

The wealthy Pozo Donati died, leaving in his will his unloving relatives. Suspicious Gianni Chicchi, as Donati and concealed by a bed curtain, is supposed to dictate a new will. And he does so, but differently than planned. “Gianni Schicchi” is perhaps the most popular of the three one-act operas from “Il Trittico” by Puccini, not only thanks to the incomparable “O mio babbino caro”, but also because of the series’ hilarious and completely unconventional plot of “Deceived Crooks”.
