After winning the mixed bronze medal, Sofia Bolkanova quickly reached the round of 16 at the European Championships in Munich in table tennis doubles. The 27-year-old, along with Romanian partner Bernadette Zuck, beat Italy’s Nicole Arlia/Gia Monvardini on Tuesday and confirmed her ambition for another medal. In the men’s singles, Alexander Chin reached the preliminary round where he finished second in the group.
“We had some difficulties adjusting in the first group because we came from a mixed husband,” Bolkanova said. “We’ve proven on the World Tour that we can play well and we want at least a medal.” Natalia Bartica / Natalia Bajor of Poland will meet in the Round of 16 on Wednesday (from 9:30 am).
Caroline Michik and her British partner Ho Tin-Tin had a lot more problems than the number three-ranked pair Polcanova/Szöcs. Against Ivana Malopabic/Sulomega Pratico (SRB/UKR), the two actually fell 1:2 in sets, but won 3:2. Amelie Solga and Czech Marketa Sivikova lost to Sweden’s Rebecca Moskantor/Filippa Bergand who won 3-1.
Chen finished second in the group stage after beating Montenegro Filip Radovic 3-2. The last stop there was for David Serdaroglu, who defeated Kosovo Fatih Karabacak 3-0 but exited third in the group.
