According to Syrian Kurdish fighters, Turkey bombed the city of Kobani in northern Syria. A spokesman for the Kurdish-led military coalition, the Syrian Democratic Forces, said yesterday that the Turkish Air Force had launched several attacks.
Earlier this week, Turkey blamed an alleged supporter of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) for an attack in Istanbul that killed six people. Accordingly, she is said to have been instructed in Kobani in the Kurdish region of northeastern Syria.
Both the armed Kurdistan Workers’ Party and its political wing, as well as the Syrian military alliance, the Syrian Democratic Forces, led by the Kurdish People’s Protection Units, have strongly denied the allegations. The United States supports the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) and played a crucial role in expelling Islamic State (ISIS) fighters from Syria and also from Kobani.
On the other hand, Turkey accuses the People’s Protection Units of being a branch of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), and thus also classifies them as “terrorists”. Turkey has been trying for years to establish a “buffer zone” in the Kurdish region on its border with Syria and expel the Kurdish units from there.
