Former US President Donald Trump has suffered a legal defeat in a legal row over an investigation into his handling of classified government documents. An appeals court ruled in a decision published yesterday (local time) that it was illegal to appoint a special representative at Trump’s request to review documents seized during a search of the former president’s private home.
She added that the district court that ruled in appointing the special counsel did not have the authority to prevent the state from using the seized documents lawfully in a criminal investigation. This is a win for the US Department of Justice, which has been investigating Trump for several months.
In August, the FBI searched Trump’s Mar-a-Lago mansion in Palm Beach, Florida, and seized various classified information, some of which are of the highest level of classified. By keeping the documents in his private home so long after Trump left office, he could have committed a criminal offense. It remains unclear if Trump will eventually be charged.
