The Germany U20 national ice hockey team suffered an 8-1 New Year’s Eve loss to the Czech Republic at the U20 World Championships in Canada – but the mood wasn’t so bad at the start of the year. Because the day before, national coach Tobias Abstreiter’s team secured a quarter-final ticket with a 4:2 win over Austria. Weid Oswald (EHC Red Bull Munich) scored Germany’s consolation goal against the Czech Republic. In the last eight, a German team that also includes Weden’s Adrian Klein (now Straubing Tigers) will face a very strong American side on Monday.

“We reached our internal goal and now we’re back in the quarterfinals. The boys can be very proud of that,” Upcomber said after the preliminary round, well aware that the effort against the American boys was almost hopeless.
