In view of the upcoming Orthodox Christmas, Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered a one-and-a-half-day ceasefire in Ukraine. Putin instructed the Russian Ministry of Defense to stop hostilities in the neighboring country from tomorrow noon until Sunday evening, according to the Kremlin statement.
Putin also called on Ukraine to declare a ceasefire, according to the Russian news agency TASS.
The head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill, had earlier called for a ceasefire on the occasion of Orthodox Christmas. Kirill, who supports Russian President Putin, said that for all Orthodox Christians to be able to attend Mass, the cannons must be silent between 12 noon on Friday and midnight on Saturday.
Ukraine: Russia must leave the regions first
An advisor to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Mykhailo Podolyak, tweeted after Russia declared that Ukraine does not attack foreign lands “like Russia”, killing civilians. Podolyak said that the Russian Federation must first leave the occupied territories, and only then there will be a “temporary ceasefire.”
Ukraine had previously rejected Kirill’s proposal. Podoljak wrote, “It’s a satirical snare and an element of propaganda.”
