Mikaela Schiffrin: 86th success and record World Cup win – record set by Ingmar Stenmark

“When I was a little girl and dreamed of winning World Cup races, I never thought I could achieve this record. It’s incredible to me,” Shiffrin told Norwegian broadcaster NRK.

But “no matter what I achieve: Ingemar Stenmark will always be synonymous with ski racing,” she asserted: “He set the standard for all of us, for all generations. He’s the number one.”

“I’m happy for them. He really deserves it,” Stenmark told AFP of equaling the record he set in 1989. Shiffrin will be “the first to win 100 races and even more if she stays healthy,” stressed the 66-year-old Swede.

Shiffrin gets the crystal ball and level with Schneider

With 20 World Cup wins in giant slalom, the world champion in this discipline also managed to tie with record holder Frene Schneider of Switzerland. It also made winning the little crystal ball perfect.

For Shiffrin, who celebrates her 28th birthday on Monday, she came full circle with her 245th World Cup start: VR on December 20, 2012, earned her first win.

Lena Dürr (+3.23) and Emma Aicher (+3.82) finished 32nd and 41st and thus missed the Top 30 final, as did Italy’s Sofia Goggia (34./+3.32).
