Today, the Ukrainian military leadership decided to continue defending the city of Bakhmut, in eastern Ukraine. The presidential office of President Volodymyr Zelensky said that all members of the military leadership unanimously agreed to continue Bakhmut’s defense.
“The defensive operation in this area is of utmost strategic importance to repel the enemy,” Army Commander Valery Zaluchny wrote on Facebook. Defending Bashmut is the key to protecting the entire front.
Huge losses
The city of Bakhmut, in eastern Ukraine, has been a focal point on the country’s eastern front for weeks. There, Russian units, led by the notorious Wagner mercenary group, attempt to occupy the place by any means necessary. So far, the Russian attackers have managed to harass the city from three sides. Bashmut is now largely destroyed. Both sides are said to have already taken heavy losses in the fighting.
On the Russian side, a Ukrainian advance in the Donetsk region to relieve Bakhmut is increasingly expected. According to Russian reports, several Ukrainian brigades have been deployed between the cities of Slovensk and Kostyantynivka. So far, however, the mud that appeared in the area in the spring did not allow rapid progress on paved roads.
