US considers sanctions against Hungarian figures – EURACTIV.com

The US may announce new sanctions on Wednesday against influential Hungarian figures, diplomatic sources told Hungarian news site 444.

US Ambassador to Hungary David Pressman has called a press conference for Wednesday afternoon. While the meaning of the event is not yet known, diplomatic sources say it could be an announcement of new economic sanctions against Hungary.

Diplomatic relations between the Hungarian and US governments have deteriorated in recent months. US Ambassador Pressman and Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijardo clashed over the Ukraine conflict and rule of law concerns.

In February, Pressman criticized Hungary’s rapprochement with Russia.

“Hungarian government politicians often talk about promoting peace, but from condemning sanctions to accepting Russian cease-fire proposals, they continue to express their support for Putin,” he said.

Recently, the United States decided not to invite Hungary to Biden’s pro-democracy summit over concerns about Hungary’s “lack of democratic values.”
