Corona: Erdogan enters Turkey into a state of tight lockdown – Corona virus –

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday that from Thursday through May 17, there will be a “complete lockdown”. With few exceptions, citizens are only allowed to leave their homes for shopping or medical treatment.

All schools will be closed and will have to switch to online lessons, and travel between different cities will require approval from authorities. Erdogan says that while there are first openings in other European countries, Turkey must cut new infections so as not to be left behind.

Without the most stringent measures and curbing new infections, Erdogan said tourism, trade and education would pay a heavy price. The goal is to reduce the number of new infections every day to 5,000. More than 37,000 new cases were recorded on Monday. The number of cases is very high, especially in Istanbul. And the Ministry of Health announced, on Monday, that the incidence rate for seven days was about 850 cases per 100,000 people. The Canakkale Province in western Turkey has also been severely affected. Turkey has so far imposed partial lockdowns in order to contain the Corona pandemic while not doing too much damage to the economy.

After injuries subsided in March, the number of infections increased again dramatically. To date, more than 4.6 million coronavirus infections and 38,700 deaths have been reported from the country of 83 million people. The restrictions are expected to remain in effect for less than three weeks.
