Art historian Christian Bauer presented the first book on Scheele’s contemporary Erwin Ossen (1891-1970) at the Egon Scheele Museum on Tuesday.
After words of welcome from Mayor Peter Eisensink and Museum Director Matthias Pacher, Bauer let the public take part in his extensive research work. With great effort and a bit of luck, he was able to scrutinize the collections of works he thought were lost, as well as the central documents and photo sources. This enabled Ossen’s life to be reconstructed and his work to be re-evaluated.
A treatise on Osen, Gudrun, and Oliver Doch, relatives of Osen’s last wife Dorothea Doch, and his grandson Markus Scholz, written in Germany by art historian Iris Lamowski, made an important contribution. “It’s a very emotional moment that all of these people are here today,” Bauer said.
In his book, he paints a new portrait of the eccentric artist. Accompanying Egon Schiele becomes tangible as a charismatic international artist: “Erwin Ossen is a ‘man of modernity. Osen’s art is almost limitless. Along with him, Egon Schiele finds his main expressive work.”
The book “Erwin Ossen. Friend of the artist Egon Schiele ”is published by the University of Further Education Krems in collaboration with the Egon Schiele Museum in Tulln and published by Hirmer Verlag in German and English in June.
