Hungary wants to delay NATO’s ratification at Ankara’s request

The move must now take place in the fall, explains Nemeth, Fidesz politician. Foreign Minister Szygarto assured that Hungary would not be the last NATO country to give its approval.

Hungary postponed Sweden’s ratification of NATO membership at Türkiye’s request. This was announced by the Chairman of the Hungarian Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs, Zsolt Nemeth, on Friday. As a friend of Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s party said, according to “rtl.hu”, the ratification should take place in the fall.

Criticism of the remarks came from the opposition Momentum Party. It is “strange” that Orbán’s government, sensitive to Hungarian sovereignty, is acting at Turkey’s behest. During a visit to Vienna last week, Orban admitted that he would act in concert with Turkey on NATO expansion. Before a high-level meeting between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, Orban confirmed that he is “in constant contact” with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and Turkey. “If we have something to do, we will act. The Hungarian government does not postpone decisions,” he stressed.

Do not rush in Hungary

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Sjärto said on Friday that there is no need to rush to ratify Hungary, because the corresponding Turkish move will not take place “tomorrow”. Szijjarto confirmed, according to atv.hu. (APA)
