According to his party, AfD leader Tino Shrubala left the city again after the still-unexplained incident during an AfD election campaign on Wednesday in Ingolstadt, Germany.
“Tino Shrubala has now been able to leave Ingolstadt and will receive further medical treatment,” an AfD press release last night said. All planned election campaign dates in Bavaria have been cancelled. A new state parliament will be elected in the Free State on Sunday.
Prosecutor: There is no trace of the attack
48-year-old Shrubala was taken to hospital during the AfD’s election campaign event in central Ingolstadt. According to his office, he was transferred to the intensive care unit. There was also talk of a “piercing site” on the body. The police and prosecutor spoke of “superficial redness or swelling.”
The exact background is still unclear. The Public Prosecutor’s Office has launched investigations against unidentified people on suspicion of causing bodily harm, but so far they say they have “no information” that Shrubala was attacked.
Initially, the AfD stuck to its original statement that there had been an “incident of assault.” The message that evening referred to a “physical attack.” A “stab wound” was diagnosed at the hospital. “Mr Shrubala also experienced severe pain and nausea.”
