The hardline conservative enjoys the support of former President Trump. He wins a new internal vote for the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives. However, that wasn’t enough for Steve Scalise either. There are plans for a boycott this time as well
In the turbulent race for the presidency of the US House of Representatives, Republicans narrowly chose the hardliner Jim Jordan as the new candidate in the internal elections. According to consistent US media reports, the confidant of former President Donald Trump received 124 votes in the vote at the parliamentary group meeting behind closed doors on Friday. However, 55 Republicans announced that they would not support him in the general elections. So his freestyle is uncertain.
In order to become the actual speaker of the House of Representatives, he needs the votes of an absolute majority, i.e. 217 deputies, in voting in the plenary session. If it is rejected unanimously by 213 Democrats, as expected, at most four out of 222 Republicans in the Senate are likely to vote against it. But in a test vote among Republicans, only 152 deputies announced that they would support him in a plenary vote, 55 voted against the hardline conservative, and one person abstained.
The rival candidate in the GOP internal vote was the little-known Austin Scott of Georgia, who surprisingly announced his candidacy. He came out of the gate with 81 votes.
Since Kevin McCarthy left there has been chaos
Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, became the first Speaker of the US Congress in US history to be voted in last week. Initially, the right-wing Conservative Party had Steve Scalise as a potential successor For the third most important position in the state after the president and vice president, but because he also did not obtain the necessary majority, he withdrew his candidacy on Thursday evening.
It is unclear when the House will vote on the presidency and whether Republicans will find a majority nominee by then. As long as the council remains leaderless, observers say a vote on aid packages for the military conflicts in Ukraine and Israel is unlikely.
