Long Island is the vacation island of New Yorkers, but it’s also a longing destination for those looking to leave the stressful city life behind.
New York – the city that never sleeps. As exciting as the metropolis is with its hip cultural scene, trendy restaurants, and ever-crowded subway, sometimes you just need a break from it all—and New Yorkers love to spend it on Long Island. But weary city-goers looking for something quiet after the Statue of Liberty, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Met and Times Square will find what they’re looking for on Long Island — whether relaxing on the beach, in the first stately mansions of big bosses or in rural Long Island wine country. Long Island is surprisingly diverse.
What is this long island about? Strictly geographically, Long Island begins in New York City. John F. East of the East River, including Kennedy International Airport, parts of Brooklyn and Queens are already on the island. Towards the east, the density of settlements decreases markedly, and the Montauk Lighthouse – a historical landmark of the island – stands alone on the steep bank. Long Island deserves its name. The island is about 190 kilometers long in an east-west direction and only 32 kilometers in a north-south direction at its widest point.
