Music: Barenboim cancels concerts: Representation in the US and Canada

conductor Daniel Barenboim Concerts have to be canceled again due to illness. This time Stadtskapel Berlin is touring Canada and the US from November 25th to December 3rd. Giedrė Šlekytė, Jakub Hrůša and Yannick Nézet-Séguin will lead the 81-year-old conductor’s legendary orchestra in the planned concerts, Unter den Linden State Opera announced on Friday.

“I was really looking forward to this Tour “But my health simply does not allow me to undertake the arduous transatlantic voyages and the numerous inland journeys required by this tour,” Barenboim wrote “with great regret.”

In 1992, as General Music Director of the State Opera, Barenbaum also took over the Staatskapelle, which gained an international reputation under his direction. Her opera contract originally ran until 2027. However, he left the music direction of the State Opera at the beginning of the year due to health reasons. In 2000, the Staatskapelle elected him chief conductor for life – a position now considered only an honorary one.

He will be succeeded by Christian Thielemann, who will be coming to the Berliner Haus as general music director for the 2024/2025 season.

The Staatskapelle tour begins November 25 and 26 in Toronto under the direction of conductor Šlekytė. Hrusha will make his Chicago debut with the orchestra on November 28. Knesset-Séguin will be on stage in concerts in New York on November 30 and December 1, and in Philadelphia on December 3.
