International Women's Day is not only an opportunity to celebrate women's achievements, but also an opportunity to recognize those who often work in the background to make major events like the Danube Island Festival (DIF) possible.
This year, Catherine Gall, Deputy Mayor and Women's City Councilor, and Barbara Nowak, Party State Secretary of the SPÖ Vienna, met some of the impressive women who, year after year, help make the Danube Island Festival an unforgettable experience.
Diverse roles and responsibilities
A quick look at the participants in this special meeting reveals a diverse group of women taking on different roles and responsibilities at DIF.
Thank you to all the women behind the scenes
The Danube Island Festival would not be what it is without the commitment and hard work of these amazing women. Your work behind the scenes is essential to the smooth running of this outstanding event, which brings millions of people together every year and places Vienna at the center of cultural life. On the occasion of International Women's Day, it is important to recognize their contributions and tell their stories to emphasize the importance of equality and women's participation in all areas of society.
“In 2022, there was a big survey of women in the city of Vienna called 'Vienna, the way you want it' and one of the results was that women in Vienna want to do free events. So we started the first Women's Week in Vienna, which continues this week, with Over 100 events spread across the city, all free. And of course one of the highlights of the year is always the Danube Island Festival, the largest open-air festival in Europe, with free entry for all Viennese!
“The Danube Island Festival is an important source of inspiration for women's equality. Because we make sure that there is a fair proportion of women in all areas of the island. Not only on stage, but also behind it, for example in logistics, production, graphics or even engineering.” Electric. Everywhere you look there are a lot of women, and we are especially proud of that. Because it is important for women to get their fair share in society for equality, for a secure life and for self-determination.
“The Danube Island Festival is special for me as an artist simply because it gives you the opportunity to have a stage in Austria. The Danube Island Festival is the biggest stage in Europe and is all about music. I think it's great that other artists also have the opportunity to play on such a big stage.”
