One of the oldest buildings in the Danish capital. Fire threatens the art collection
Several paintings were rescued from the burning building of the historic stock exchange in Copenhagen. Television footage Tuesday morning showed people carrying historical paintings, among other items. The Old Stock Exchange houses a large art collection, including the work “From the Copenhagen Stock Exchange” by the artist P. S. CroyerWhich was carried by several people during the fire.
The building's tower collapsed due to the fire. Several streets and the area surrounding the building were cordoned off, as police announced in X. Heavy smoke and flames were seen rising from the building. Copenhagen police expect the area to remain closed for a long period of time. Due to significant traffic problems, it is recommended to leave the city center only if necessary. The cause of the fire was not clear at first.
The building was completed in 1625 with a steeple and is one of the oldest buildings in Copenhagen. It is currently being restored and therefore scaffolded. The restoration aims to correct the inappropriate renovation of the building in the 19th century and to restore the facade to its original appearance.
