Julian Nagelsmann will remain coach of the German national team after the European Football Championship in Germany in the summer, and will also lead the German Football Association team to the next World Cup finals in two years in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The 36-year-old will not return to the Bundesliga for Bayern Munich. At the Bundesliga champions, he was considered a hot candidate to succeed Thomas Tuchel, with whom Bayern ended cooperation early at the end of the season.
“This is a decision from the heart,” Nagelsmann said in a statement from the German Football Association on Friday. “It is a great honor to be able to coach the national team and work with the best players in the country. Through successful and enthusiastic performances, we have the opportunity to inspire an entire country,” he said, referring to the European Championship.
He added: “The two victories over France and the Netherlands in March gave a preview of this. I was very impressed by the enthusiasm of the crowd. We now want to play together a successful European Championship on home soil, and we are all excited about that. “After that, my coaching team and I are really looking forward to the challenge of the World Cup,” Nagelsmann added.
'Strong signal' for DFB
DFB President Bernd Neuendorf spoke of Nagelsmann's win as “a strong signal for the German Football Association and the national team.” “Because it is on the wish list of many top clubs across Europe.” Now there is “security planning and everyone can fully focus on a successful performance at the European Championships.”
The leadership of the German Football Association was able to achieve comprehensive continuity in the leadership of the national team in a short period of time. Just eleven days ago, the federation also extended the contract with national team manager Rudi Völler until after the 2026 World Cup. The 64-year-old played a key role in guiding Nagelsmann to the Bundesliga last September.
Nagelsmann rebuilt the German Football Association team
Nagelsmann succeeded Hansi Flick last fall. After a mediocre start, Nagelsmann managed to turn around the mood ahead of the European Championship with a radical restructuring of the squad and two huge Test match victories during Toni Kroos' successful return to the national team.
