Treating ringworm with ointments and medications
Treatment for ringworm is often with an antifungal (antifungal) containing the active ingredients ciclopirox, terbinafine, or imidazole. They are usually applied externally in the form of ointments, creams, lotions or powders (topical treatment).
It is important that the ointment is applied generously once or twice a day with a margin of at least two centimeters around the skin patches. Treatment usually lasts two to four weeks. In some cases, dermatologists also prescribe antifungals in tablet form. These work throughout the body and can be used to treat severe cases.
During treatment, those affected should keep the skin surrounding the fungal infection as dry as possible and wear loose, breathable clothing.
Ringworm: Can home remedies help?
Experts advise against treating ringworm with home remedies. Garlic, apple cider vinegar, or lavender oil may be able to relieve itching. However, its effectiveness has not been scientifically proven. Unwanted side effects such as skin reactions are also possible.
