According to a media report, the European Union has agreed to security commitments for Ukraine. These obligations are scheduled to enter into force in the summer and will apply until Ukraine joins the European Union and NATO. This was reported by the German newspaper “Welt am Sonntag”, according to a preliminary report, citing a confidential draft of security commitments that the newspaper received.

“The EU and its member states will contribute, in the long term and with partners, to Ukraine’s security commitments aimed at helping Ukraine defend itself, resist attempts at destabilization and deter future aggression,” the 11-page document says. This was agreed upon by the ambassadors of the European Union member states in Brussels. These measures ensured political, military and economic support for the country attacked by Russia.

The draft is currently being coordinated between the European External Action Service (EEAS) and the government in Kiev, Welt am Sonntag newspaper reported. Therefore, the security obligations should enter into force at the beginning of July of this year at the latest.

According to the report, the European Union assures Ukraine of immediate consultations in the event of further attacks, which must be agreed upon by both sides first. It is indirectly unlikely that in the event of attacks, EU soldiers will participate in the battles against Russia alongside Ukrainian soldiers. However, Brussels promised Kiev to continue supplying it with lethal and non-lethal weapons, continue training soldiers, help with security sector reform, support in clearing mines in the country and cooperate in the face of hybrid threats and cyber attacks. The European Union is also committed to providing massive support for the reconstruction of Ukraine.
