A few hours before the final of the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC), protests broke out against Israel. The Swiss Economic and Social Council hopes Nemo will stay away from the flag display. The Norwegian points announcer also backed down.
Singer Alessandra Meli justified this step on Saturday, in a video on Instagram, by citing Israeli measures in the Gaza Strip. “A genocide is happening right now,” the 21-year-old said, calling on people to be guided by “the love of truth.”
Millie said the ESC’s motto “United by Music” aligns with her motivations for making music. “But right now, those words are just empty words.” The singer, who also has Italian roots, reached No. 5 at Norway's ESC last year with the song “Queen of Kings”. Broadcaster Ingvild Helljesen from NRK was supposed to replace Millie.
Review by Bambi Thug
According to information from NRK and Swedish broadcaster SVT, a crisis meeting was held in Malmö. In addition to Nemo, representatives of Ireland and Greece also did not appear in the flag display. Irishman Bambi Thug, who has repeatedly criticized the participation of Israeli singer Eden Golan, also missed training on Saturday.
Bambie Thug wrote on Instagram that there was a “situation” when the artists wanted to take the stage to show off the flag. According to media reports, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), as the ESC's regulator, announced that it was reviewing the situation.
The Eurovision Insider account reports that shortly before the show, Nemo and the two other actors quarreled with a member of the Israeli delegation who was filming without permission.
