British King Charles III. He unveiled his first official photo since his coronation at Buckingham Palace in London on Tuesday. The painting was commissioned by artist Jonathan Yeo in 2020 – in fact to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Charles' membership in the Draper's Company, a centuries-old association of merchants now dedicated to charitable causes.
Charles wanted a butterfly in the picture
The painting shows the 75-year-old king dressed in a Welsh Guards uniform and decorated with medals, his hands resting on a sword. Except for the face and hands, the entire image appears to be covered in a bright red veil. A butterfly – added by the artist at the king's suggestion – hovers over the king's right shoulder. Charles wanted to signal his commitment to protecting the environment, according to a report by the British news agency PA.
The image is scheduled to be shown at Philip Mold Gallery in London from May 16 to June 14. Submission is free. It will then find a permanent home at Draper's Hall at the end of August.
