The men's competition was much closer. In the decathlon, behind leading Olympic champion Damien Warner, the gap between the next six athletes was just 86 points heading into the 1500 metres. However, European Championship runner-up Simon Ehmer, who was slightly injured, will no longer participate, meaning the remaining result is still open.
Finally, Canadian Warner was victorious in Gotzis for the eighth time – with 8,678 points. Dutchman Sven Rosen came in second place, ahead of Johannes Erem from Estonia. In the top ten decathlons, three Germans finished in sixth place, led by Tim Novak, who set a new best of 8,282 points.
