The 30-year-old lost to Finland's Otto Virtanen on Wednesday at Suzanne-Lenglen 2:6.5:7. The lower Austrian narrowly missed out on a direct ticket to the main field and did not receive a wildcard either, meaning he had to be eliminated from 11th place. Filip Misulic is still seeking a ticket to the main festival.
Thiem announced the end of his career with Herbst about two weeks ago. His last trip was to Paris as an active participant.
“I have slowly built a great relationship with the tournament, and with your fans,” Thiem said to thunderous applause. The organizers expressed their gratitude and responded to criticism of the wildcard decision by presenting a personal Roland Garros trophy. Tim didn't take offense to that. “I've had a lot of great results and great experiences on these courses. It's the Grand Slam with my best results. I've really enjoyed every year. Thanks for all the memories.”
