In the run-up to the European Championship, a WDR survey on the composition of the national team caused sharp criticism. Germany won their second qualifying round match in the European Championship 2-0 over Hungary in the evening, thus qualifying early to the round of 16. The goals were scored by Jamal Musiala and Ilkay Gundogan. In the first round match, the German Football Association team defeated the Scottish team 5-1.
