The Film Festival “Crossing Europe” begins in Linz on Tuesday. 123 feature films and documentaries from 40 countries, including 95 premieres, will be shown in the program through June 6. Covid regulations have made a variable program layout and matching security concept essential: The Central Hub as an additional venue – plus City Kino and Moviemento – brings some relief. Overall, the festival this year provides two-thirds of the seating capacity for 2019.

‘Behind the Headlines’: SZ journalists watch the Ibiza video
As usual, “Crossing Europe” includes several political films. Among other things, the documentary “Behind the Headlines” by Daniel Sakr will be shown through the investigation section of the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”. The film images are dedicated to aging Michael Gorbachew, Finnish architect Alvar Aalto, performer Marina Abramovi, and pioneering German filmmaker Ulrike Oettinger. At the opening, Maria Schraeder entered the Berlinale competition “Ich bin dein Mensch”, the documentary “Kupa” about the Balkan route, and in the section for local artists, “Surviving Gusen” about the area around the former concentration camp in Upper Austria.
