One dead, several injured on plane in Singapore
Just at the end of May, a Singapore Airlines Boeing 777 suddenly plunged to the ground at 2,000 metres (6,600 feet) on its way from London to Singapore. A 73-year-old Briton died, probably of a heart attack. His wife and dozens of other people were injured, some seriously. Most were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the sudden turbulence.
According to experts, turbulence — especially so-called clear-air turbulence, which cannot be detected by onboard radar — has become more common due to climate change. According to a 2023 study, the average duration of turbulence increased by 16 percent from 1979 to 2020. The number of severe turbulence increased by more than 50 percent.
