Construction of a battery cell factory begins in the US

Commercial vehicle manufacturer Daimler Trucks and its partners have begun construction of their battery cell factory in the US state of Mississippi. The company announced that the foundation stone laying ceremony was held. A facility with an area of over 185,000 square meters on an area of 500 hectares in Byhalia now has a production capacity of 21 GWh. Mathematically, that would be enough for 35,000 electric trucks with 600 kilowatt hours of battery capacity.

The factory is expected to create more than 2,000 jobs. The start of production is planned for 2027. The plant will initially manufacture lithium iron phosphate batteries for use in battery-electric commercial vehicles.

A related joint venture, Amplify Cell Technologies, was announced last September. Daimler Trucks has entered into a partnership with Accelera, a division of US engine manufacturer Cummins, and US truck manufacturer Paccar.

The three companies each own 30 percent of the joint venture and jointly control it. It has a ten percent stake in Chinese battery cells manufacturer EVE Energy as a technology partner.
