The union announced that a strike at South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics that began on Monday and was scheduled to last three days will be extended indefinitely. The Samsung Electronics National Union justified the move in a statement today by saying that management was not ready to talk.
According to the union, more than 5,000 members walked off the job on Monday. In total, the union has more than 30,000 members.
Talks since January
According to South Korea's Yonhap news agency, Samsung said yesterday that the strike had no impact on labor procedures. A senior union representative contradicted the company's statements – production has definitely been affected.
There was already a one-day strike in June, the first of its kind in the company’s history. Samsung has previously successfully resisted any unionization of its employees for decades.
Negotiations between management and the union have been ongoing since January. The union side has rejected the company’s offer of a 5.1 percent wage increase. It is also insisting on improving annual leave and transparency of performance-related bonuses.
