Donald Trump wants to block US Vice President Kamala Harris from accessing certain funds for his election campaign. The New York Times and CNN reported that the Republican team has filed a complaint with the Federal Campaign Finance Commission (FEC).
The Trump team accuses Harris of violating campaign finance laws by accessing money previously raised by US President Joe Biden when he was still a presidential candidate.
Complaint: 'Harris trying to steal campaign funds'
The newspaper and radio quoted the complaint filed by Trump's legal advisor, David Warrington, as saying that “Kamala Harris is trying to steal $91.5 million of Joe Biden's remaining campaign funds.” This is “blatantly” illegal.
Warrington says, among other things, that Harris is not eligible for the money because she is not yet the official candidate. It is also said that Biden simply cannot pass on the money because he is no longer running and therefore no longer entitled to the $1 million.
Discussion since the first rumors about Biden's withdrawal
The move by the Trump team is not surprising. The use of Biden’s campaign donations has been debated since Biden’s withdrawal became clear. Biden’s team changed the name of its campaign from “Biden for President” to “Harris for President” after his withdrawal.
Many legal experts argue that Harris’ access to the funds was legitimate because her name was also registered as a vice presidential candidate. However, others conclude that Harris could not have easily accessed the funds. The dispute is unlikely to be resolved until Election Day on November 5.
