Demo version of Apple Maps Available to the public on the web. Users can now access Apple Maps directly through certain browsers like Safari and Chrome on Macs and iPads — or using Chrome and Edge on Windows computers. With this, Apple may want to compete directly with Google Maps, twelve years after the maps app was first installed on iPhones.
Currently available in English only.
The web version of Apple Maps doesn’t work (yet) as well as the app. At the moment, the map is only available in English, with other languages planned. This means that directions can only be accessed on foot or by car. It’s not possible to plan routes using public transport. There is a feature available that lets users read curated travel guides, for example from Atlas Obscura. Apple also reminds companies that: Business to connect to Apple MapsSo that users receive the right directions and additional information.
Look-Around and additional browsers will come later.
In the coming months, Apple plans to integrate additional features such as a 360-degree panoramic “Look Around” function into the web version. This is equivalent to Google Street View, which shows a 360-degree view of many countries, places and streets. Apple Card is also scheduled to be accessible via Android, Firefox or Linux phones later, but the integration still needs some time. Developers have the option to use Apple Maps Via MapKit Javascript API to incorporate it into their products.
that doesn't work
After the first test attempt, the beta version unfortunately became unsatisfactory and currently cannot keep up with Google Maps. The search for specific locations does not work; often only stores similar to the address you are looking for are displayed – even if they are in the USA instead of Austria. In addition, information about companies, hotels, restaurants or authorities is missing or outdated. When searching for “trending topics” you first land in the USA, then the old company address at Liechtensteinstrasse 11-115 in the 9th district is displayed. The new company headquarters moved two months ago to the old Alpenmilch premises, namely to Weyringergasse 34 in the 4th district of Vienna. There is still room for improvement in the accessibility of Google Maps services.
