Eva Provosova wins Straelen Translator Prize 2024

The Straelen Prize for Translator 2024 goes to Czech translator Eva Provosová, whose translations are published by Paul Zsolnay Verlag and Septim Verlag, among others. In 2024, the jury includes Austrian Theresa Brammer.
The Stralin Translator's Prize, worth €25,000, was awarded to Eva Provosova, with special recognition for her entire translation work, for the translation of Jacquim Topol: Sensitive Person (Sührkamp, ​​2019).

The 2024 jury consisted of:

• Michael Kegler, translator from Portuguese
• Anne Dorie Crone, Literary Editor at rbb Kultur
• Olga Radetzkaja, translated from Russian
• Ulrich Sonnenberg, translator from Danish and Norwegian

“The translator’s sensitive navigation leaves no detail out of consideration and does justice to the tension present in the original text throughout. There is hardly a sentence that does not have to overcome some difficulty in translation, and yet the pleasure of operating the text radiates from every pore.” (Excerpt from the jury’s statement)

Eva Provosová (* Prague 1963) has lived in Germany since 1983. She studied Slavic studies and Eastern European history in Hamburg and Glasgow and works as a translator. In addition to Jacquim Topol, the authors she has translated are Radka Denimarkova, Jaroslav Rudyš, Katarina Kokpelova, Martin Samos, Katerina Tuchkova and Peter Zelenka.

The awards ceremony will be held on October 29, 2024.
The Literature Prize of the Kunststiftung NRW – Straelen Translator's Prize is one of the most prestigious translation prizes in Europe and is awarded annually in cooperation with the College of European Translators in Straelen.
