Is there a new touch controller coming to the PS5?

It’s not just new game controllers that are being developed, but also new input devices. Console gamers are talking about controllers here. These have also changed significantly over time. While they used to be flat, angular, and very simple with only a few buttons, they are now little wonders that offer haptic feedback, vibration, and more. And it looks like Sony has one. PS5 Touch Controller a promise.

According to a new patent, Sony could be working on a new controller that uses a touch screen instead of buttons. Sony has filed several patents for new peripherals or features that could be used in the future PlayStation 6.

PS5 console revolution with touch screen?

Sony’s patents show at least one software-based feature that could turn recorded gameplay into replayable mini-games. It could also be a system that would allow for voice or video calls during gameplay. Other patents hint at new controllers or hardware features, like a DualSense with dedicated earbud slots or a detachable touchscreen peripheral for playing away from a TV.

What's so special about this new patent? Earlier this month, another Sony controller patent was published, a new one Design of a control unit with a touch screen describes (via Gamerant.com). The front of this controller will be a large touch screen where players can program as many buttons as they need. These buttons can be of any size and placed in any order the player prefers.

The PS4 and PS5 controllers already have touchpads that allow for touch-based input, but they’re nowhere near the touchscreen advancements outlined in this new patent. While those options are used with traditional PlayStation controller buttons, this new patent would theoretically replace all buttons with a fully customizable touchscreen.

Will this “PS6 console” become a reality? As with all patents, there’s no guarantee that Sony’s new touch controller idea will ever come to fruition. It would be an interesting idea, now that the world is used to smartphones. I can’t imagine what the old Nokia 3210 would have said about it.
